What are the deadlines for participating in Hands On New York Day?
Please note: Team Leaders and Site Captains only need to attend one training session.
Who can participate in Hands On New York Day?
Anyone over the age of 12. Volunteers aged 12 - 17 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Youth Teams must be high school students aged 14 years and older and must be accompanied by an adult chaperone.
Is there a cost or fee to participate?
We're asking volunteers to pay a $20 registration fee to participate. This fee helps us defray the considerable cost that goes into this important day of service. The fee is not refundable or eligible for application toward fundraising prizes, even though the fee appears in your fundraising totals. The fee is deductible as a charitable contribution for income tax purposes to the extent allowed by law. Volunteers representing 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations are eligible for a discounted fee. Please contact Damon Bolden at Damon.Bolden@newyorkcares.org or 212-402-1139 for details.
How do I register as a team?
A team is a group of 10-50 people who want to volunteer together. Teammates can be friends, family, coworkers, associates, or any combination of the above. Every team needs to appoint a Team Leader who will coordinate details for the team on and before the day. The team registration deadline is Friday, March 19.
Can we choose where we will work?
No. We place volunteers according to team size and site needs, so we ask you to be flexible with your site assignment and be willing to travel wherever your help is most needed. We will e-mail your site assignment by March 17.
Do I have to be part of a team in order to participate?
No. Most people volunteer with teams of family, friends, or coworkers, but individuals are always welcome. From the registration page, select ?Register as an Individual? and follow the instructions to join a team in the borough of your choice.
Do I need to attend a New York Cares orientation in order to participate?
No. This event is open to everyone, but we hope you'll attend an orientation to start volunteering year-round.
Can I participate in the event without registering?
Walk-ins are not permitted. We require all volunteers to pre-register so we can plan projects and provide enough supplies. The registration deadline is Friday, April 16, or when we reach capacity, whichever comes first.
Do I have to volunteer all day?
Yes. Projects have been carefully planned to accommodate the right number of volunteers to get the job done and leave sites looking beautiful and refreshed. If you leave early, we can't complete the work we committed to do.
What happens if it rains?
Hands On New York Day takes place rain or shine. Every site has a backup plan in case of inclement weather.
Is lunch provided?
No. All volunteers should bring a bag lunch unless your Team Leader tells you otherwise. Keep in mind that transportation and time constraints may make buying lunch nearby difficult.
Why raise money for Hands On New York Day?
New York Cares is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and relies on the generosity of donors to make our work possible. The money you raise for Hands On New York Day will create 11,000 volunteer projects serving 400,000 New Yorkers in need this year. Every dollar donated to New York Cares amounts to $6 in service to the community. If all volunteers raise $150 in honor of their service on Hands On New York Day, we could provide $4.5 million in service projects this year.
How do I fundraise for Hands On New York Day?
You will get your own customizable Web page upon registration that allows you to e-mail family, friends, and coworkers a direct link to your donation page. Friends and family can also donate by clicking "Sponsor Volunteer" on www.handsonnewyorkday.org and entering your name.
Where can I find my personal donation page?
The long URL that you received in your confirmation receipt takes you to your personal page. You can copy and paste this link into an e-mail to lead people directly to your page. You can also log in to ?My HQ? and click the ?My Webpage? tab.
How can I see who has sponsored me?
Log in to "My HQ" with the username and password you received when you registered. You can view your donor list from there.
Why aren't all of my donors are showing up on the scroll mechanism?
Your donors can choose whether or not they appear in the recognition scroll. Some may want to be anonymous.
Are my donors' contributions tax-deductible?
New York Cares is a 501(c) (3) organization, so all donations are tax-deductible. Our tax ID# is 13-3444193.
Why isn't the "Sponsor Volunteer" search finding a volunteer whom I know has registered?
The search is not case sensitive, but you must type in the first name or last name of the volunteer exactly as it's spelled. If you can't locate a volunteer whom you are sure has registered, e-mail handsonnewyorkday@newyorkcares.org.
I forgot my username and password.
